East Cambridge is a historic, dynamic neighborhood situated on the north bank of the Charles River, east of downtown Cambridge, Massachusetts. East Cambridge is famous for its rich industrial history and multicultural community and has, over centuries, evolved from marshes and farmland to a dense city with a unique grid street pattern and mixed-use nature.
Originally, East Cambridge was largely salt marshes and mudflats, isolating it from neighboring areas and Boston. Its early name, Graves’ Neck, reflected its first European settler, engineer Thomas Graves, who surveyed the land in the early 17th century. For many decades, the land was used primarily for farming, and its rich oyster beds provided a resource for Indigenous peoples and early colonists. The physical isolation of the area by marshes and waterways restricted growth until the slow process of land reclamation linked East Cambridge to the neighboring districts.
The district started meaningful development in the early 19th century through the control of Andrew Craigie and Boston investors. The building of bridges and roads like Cambridge Street facilitated linkages, while the construction of the Middlesex County Courthouse by Charles Bulfinch drew in the legal profession and stimulated growth.
